Character Background
• History: Hilda-specific Stuff | Overall Game Timeline | Verdant Wind Timeline | Game Synopsis
• Core Relationships:
Holst
Hilda truly, honestly loves her older brother—and he loves her in return. Maybe a little too much, actually? His over-protective ways can leave Hilda sighing, at times, but she does appreciate that he's always looking out for her well-being. Plus they're just very close! When Hilda is away from Goneril, she writes him regularly to keep him up-to-date with both the war and fun, friendly gossip. He's the best brother a girl could ask for, and she is so, so proud of his many accomplishments (even if hearing about them makes her feel like taking a year-long nap).
Claude
Mr. Leader Man himself! Dear ol' Claude. While they may seem an unlikely duo, at first glance, the truth of the matter is that no one sees through Hilda's act quite like Claude—and hardly anyone sees through Claude's act quite like Hilda, because they are both far trickier than they present themselves to the world at large. Like, they both love to have fun; Claude is both the best and most infuriating gossip partner, given that he rarely reveals anything about himself, but for all their light-hearted banter—their good-natured teasing!—there are Deeper Levels to them both that others just seem to miss. Hilda appreciates that about him—and she can't even be too mad that he sees through her more often than not, because hey: it can be nice to drop the act every now and again.
(Some of it, anyway.)
Anyway, as Claude's retainer/ride or die/right hand girl, there is little that Hilda wouldn't do for her bestie. She can complain about him as much as she wants; you, however, do not have the right. 💁♀️
Lorenz
Oh, Lorenz. Their relationship can be testy, at times—Lorenz is more Type A whereas Hilda is, like, Type Z—but they both genuinely care for both the Leicester Alliance and their friends. There is little they won't do to defend either? Plus Hilda recognizes that, though Lorenz can be a bit of a pill, he is a trustworthy, reliable ally... who can and will call Claude out, so. That's perfect for Hilda! He can handle the Fussing; she will handle the lighter stuff.
Marianne
Marianne is so soft, and sweet, and shy that Hilda thinks she is just the cutest—and thus Hilda puts effort forth for Marianne without any real complaints. Marianne doesn't even need to ask for Hilda's help? If Marianne is, say, organizing a room and Hilda walks in, Hilda will take over just to have an opportunity to chat about anything and everything. Hilda is constantly gassing her up! Hilda is always trying to bolster her confidence! Hilda is out here crafting cute accessories for Marianne, and putting together tea parties for Marianne, and telling others how adorable Marianne is—because Marianne is, without a doubt, Hilda's favorite.
Character Personality Through Key Moments
(2+) Positive Experiences:
Loyal
While Hilda is quick to tell others that, no, they really shouldn't count on her for anything, the truth of the matter is that Hilda will do anything for those she genuinely cares for. She will push through her crippling fear of failure in order to support her loved ones—and I mean, the best example of this is honestly the fact that she fought in a war when she didn't necessarily have to. As 1. the second child of an influential noble family and 2. a spoiled princess, Hilda could have stayed home? Could have placed herself at the back of the pack, allowing others to fight for her. Not every noble needs to risk their life...
...But Hilda did, time and time and time again, because she couldn't—can't—stand the thought of her friends placing themselves in danger while she watches from the sidelines. Her loyalty to them (especially dear old Claude) ensured that she served on the front lines, doing all that she could to defend the people she loved.
(In fact, in another route, Hilda ignores Claude's order to retreat—because she would rather sacrifice her life than feel as though she let him/anyone down. It doesn't happen in the route I'm pulling her from, of course, but I still think it really illustrates her fierce loyalty.)
Supportive
Hilda truly is a caring, supportive individual, especially when it comes to her dear, deer pals. Even when she's showering someone with compliments in the hopes they'll do something for her, she only says things she means, wary of throwing out empty compliments that will wind up hurting them. She wants others to know they've done a good job, or that they're appreciated, because it makes them happy—and because she, herself, knows what it's like to go without genuine compliments. People hit on her, sure, or flatter her in an attempt to get closer to her family/her brother, but as she tells someone in her support chain, "I've gotten scolds aplenty, but compliments I'm not accustomed to." She doesn't want anyone to feel this way!
And honestly, it's difficult to point to just one key moment for this—because so many of her friendships really revolve around being there for her less confident friends. She encourages her pal Marianne to focus on what she's best at as opposed to criticizing herself for every perceived failure; she tells Ignatz that he shouldn't be so quick to take on others' work, because he needs to look out for himself; she helps Caspar to see that, though his hot-headed ways do need to be reeled in from time to time, it's still perfectly fine for him to be himself.
(2+) Negative Experiences:
Fear of Failure
Hilda's older brother, Holst, is both the head of House Goneril and a well-known, well-respected figure in the Leicester Alliance. Leader, warrior, diplomat—there is little that Holst does not excel at, which made growing up in his shadow... rather difficult, at times? Not that Hilda envied his many responsibilities, nor felt slighted by him; he was, by all accounts, a fantastic, loving sibling, but he did leave some mighty big shoes for her to fill. Her best was never quite as good as Holst's—and above that, she saw the immense pressure that Holst was forced to bear day after day. He was not allowed to make mistakes; his very rare missteps shook him to his core.
And Hilda wants no part of that!
Or: Failure is terrifying. Truly. Hilda has taken this fear and built so much of herself around it, adopting a lazy, delicate persona meant to discourage anyone from asking for her anything. Whether it's something as small as making tea, or something as large as, say, depending on her support in a battle, Hilda tries her hardest to seem too weak/inept/etc to do little more than stand to the side and watch—and sure, it's nice to rarely need to lift a finger! It can be fun to charm/compliment others into doing this, that, or the other, but the worry that they'll expect something she can't quite deliver lingers in the back of her mind.
Manipulative
Listen: Hilda knows that she is an attractive woman? And Hilda is not afraid to use that to her advantage, especially when it comes to the opposite sex. She will happily flirt her way through life!
But sometimes her style of manipulation is a bit more cunning, given that she's quite good at reading people? Sometimes it's as simple as massaging someone's ego a bit in order to spur them into doing this, that, or the other for her; other times it's as complicated as, say, casually reminding Lorenz that she writes many letters to her very important, very influential brother, so if Lorenz picked up her slack during training, she would be sure to slip in a few lines about how noble and hard-working he is. And maybe that's underhanded! Maybe that is, again, rather manipulative of Hilda, but she honestly sees it as more of a... give-and-take type of scenario. She loves when others help her out, yes, but she doesn't expect them to do it for free; she's more than willing to trade favors... or just gas people up until they feel really, really good about themselves and/or their abilities. There's no harm in that, she thinks, because everyone deserves to feel good about themselves! She is providing the world an essential service.
Deer Country Attributes
• Canon Powers:
- Hilda bears a Minor Crest of Goneril, which is... something in her blood? The game never explains it, honestly, but she was born with it; it's just an innate ability that, in the game, sometimes prevents enemies from performing counterattacks. It also allows her to wield her family's relic, the axe Freikugel, but she will not have that ability upon waking in this world! Dang!
- She has a ~defining ability~ known as Advocate, which "boosts the damage output of nearby male allied units." In RP terms, I suppose this means she'll give the boys something to fight for, either by playing up how weak she is or, like, flirting with them. God help them.
- She's quite skilled with an axe! She's halfway decent with a lance! She's used to wearing/fighting in heavy armor, although she doesn't necessarily like it. She's also good with flying mounts, especially wyverns.
- This is not combat-related, BUT! Hilda is well-known to be very crafty! She enjoys making jewelry/accessories/what have you out of whatever she finds in the world, and people comment on how well-made and fashionable they are. She's a DIY queen with a taste for the finer things in life, and if she can't buy, she will CRAFT.
• Omen: A small, extra fluffy Pomeranian...
• Blessed Day: Her canon birthday: February 3rd!
• Patron Pthumerian: Doorway.. which Hilda will be both pleased by (the focus on Relationships speaks to Hilda, given her own love for/loyalty to her friends and family) and wary of (the focus on commitment sounds like A Lot of pressure).
• Blood Power Manifestation: Honestly, I'd love for Hilda to pop into people's dreams? Both because it would be hilarious (do you think she won't complain about someone else's dream, knowing full well that they have no real power over it?) and because it would present her with wonderful opportunities to show her supportive side. Is this a nightmare, buddy... please carry her over the gross puddles, but also tell her why your subconscious has shaped this hellscape...
(Honestly, though? Once Hilda finds out that her blood can be turned into beautiful jewelry, that is where 99% of her focus is going to go. You can't keep a crafty queen down!)
